This is Talmage's most recent memorized poem. We heard a Julie Andrews recitation of it and thought it would be fun to memorize. It is called "The Turkey Shot Out of the Oven" and it was written by Jack Perlutsky.
This poem can be found in,
Julie Andrews' Collection of Poems, Songs, and Lullabies.

GREAT JOB, TALMAGE! I just Saw Julie Andrews on the Today show this morning talking about writing children's books and singing children's song. She is very talented. I have never heard this poem before but it reminded me of the first turkey I cooked. Sarah was a baby & I was pregnant with Justin. (That tells you how long ago it was) I was working temporarily at a place I worked at when I was in high school. It seemed to me that when Grammy cooked turkeys, they cooked all day, so I thought I would put a turkey in the oven while Papa & I were at work so we could have a yummy dinner when we got home. But to our dismay, when we opened the front door, the house was filled with smoke! I went to the oven and I just wanted to cry. The turkey had exploded in the oven & burnt turkey coated the whole oven. (I'm glad it didn't go all over the kitchen!) We couldn't figure out how come the smoke detectors hadn't gone off. We realized they did - they had been going off so long that the batteries were dead. I don't know what we had for dinner that night, but I learned how to make a turkey after that!
I just saw Julie Andrews on the Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, and she read a couple poems from that book. It was fun to hear her well-known voice reading children's poems.
Great job, Talmage! You do wonderful voice inflection in your poems, I really enjoy listening to your recitations.
I remember learning this same poem when I was your age! In fact, I still have the copy that my teacher gave me all those years ago. It was printed in purple because we didn't have nice printers back then; our teachers made copies on "ditto" machines.
